Chairwoman of the Council of Ministers of BIH Borjana Krišto took part at the second Summit for Democracy, upon an invitation by President of the United States of America Joe Biden.

Chairwoman Krišto addressed to the Summit via video-link on the first day of the Summit, organised in virtual/on-line format. She expressed her thankfulness to the host, President Biden, for this extremely valuable and useful initiative by the United States, noting her thankfulness also to Governments of Costa Rika, Netherlands, Republic of Korea and Republic of Zambia. She expressed her confidence that Summit participants share same basic values held by our societies, which should be sought for permanently, especially nowadays, when society faces a multilayer intertwined global cries, which seemed impossible only several years ago.

Chairwoman Krišto said the Summit is an opportunity to turn back to the previous time period, in which pandemics,, and unprovoked and unjustifiable Russian aggression against Ukraine were catalysers of slowed down economic growth, double-digit inflation rates, aggravated  labour market and global food supply chains situation. One must not turn the blind eye to the fact that many autocracies and dictatorships try to expand their influence to a series of regions in the world, even by misuse of modern information technologies. She added that we all witness proliferation of false information and contents, including a growing misuse of private data by certain undemocratic regimes, in effort to weaken safety of citizens and societies, especially those in the process of building-up its democratic institutions. She underlined that a joint effort only may supress such kind of challenges, while curbing-up efforts by ill-intentioned actors in weakening democracy and international legal order.

She emphasised that, taking regard of a special context of the Western Balkan countries, we have to be aware that undemocratic trends have even stronger negative repercussion to our societies. Ethnic group, gender, language and other identity differences must not be the reason for exclusion from key democratic and necessary transition processes.

Chairwoman Krišto said Bosnia and Herzegovina will harmonise its internal legislation with the highest European human rights and democracy standards for the aim of strengthening of human rights protection. She emphasised that basic reforms of legislation system will be proposed, to increase transparency, rule of law and fight against crime, including strengthening of individual and collective human rights. She added that comprehensive economic reforms await Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially in the area of environmental protection, and digitalisation, also to include numerous infrastructure projects.

Chairwoman Krišto said she convinced in success of Bosnia and Herzegovina to be realised though support and cooperation with proven friendly countries, as well as in success of joint effort within the Summit for Democracy. (end)
